My Early Flying

[ Up ] Next ]

Revised November 2015

This is the earliest I can remember flying. It would have been about 1948 when I was 6.
This plane is a 1945 Piper J3 Cub, with a rousing 65hp Franklin engine.
Carroll Hastings was a teenager, who helped my dad recover this plane.
As payment for his efforts, my father taught him how to fly and in fact, Carroll soloed in this plane.
This was taken in a grass field in Winchester, KY. Carroll took the picture for his own use,
and when he showed it to my father, my dad took possession thanking him for the photo.

This was a photo of the four of us at Bowman Field in Louisville in about 1952.
This is not the same plane as shown above. Tail number N71083. It was sold in June of 1955.

Same plane as above, same day actually.
That's my dad, me and Carroll in the bottom left. Carroll flew frequently with my father.

This was our 3rd plane. My father sold the J3 above, bought this one and recovered
it from top to bottom. N95723- a 1946 Taylorcraft, BC12-C65.  It had a faster wing than
the Cub, no flaps and floated over the fence! It was dificult to get it on the ground, so one developed
skills to "slip" it to the ground. I really learned to fly in this plane. At least 300 hours.
This aircraft is still flying! It's now in Port Alskworth, Alaska.

This was the ramp at Bowman flied were we parked it. This photo is looking southeast,
not far from where the control tower is today. "Our" spot was the third one down,
but is being fueled and not in this picture.
Note that all the planes in this photo are "tail daggers". None have nose wheels.

This Cessna 172B was a 'club' plane my father was part of in the mid 60's.
N3126A was registered in Kodiak, Alaska in May of 2013.

After years of flying, I finally got my license in 1971.
This is a Piper Cherokee 140. Note, no gray hair yet!
